Heat Exchanger Weld Design

The Challenge

During service a crack was observed growing in the weld of a heat exchanger. The challenge was to redesign the part so that the crack growth was prevented.

The Solution

A BEASY model was developed of the original design and potential new designs and the characteristics of the crack predicted.

The Value

The model predicted that in the new design selected the Stress Intensity Factors were reduced significantly and thus reduced the risk of crack growth. This was also confirmed by test results.
